Have you just asked yourself how carnival has managed to
enter this sequence? Well, the answer is very simple; it is an
immaterial “WeltKULTURerbe” world cultural heritage. And,
as such, it is entitled to receive mention here. Carnival has
been celebrated in a great variety of different manifestations
in Rhineland for about 800 years. The first carnival pro -
cessions and elaborately enacted masquerade balls were set
in scene for his noble guests, among these also Casanova,
by the celebration-loving electoral prince Clemens August
about 150 years ago. Carnival was changed by the development
of middle-class society at the beginning of the 19th
century. 1828 saw the first Shrove Monday procession in
Bonn. However, time and again, global politics prevented
people from celebrating carnival. In 1951, with the founding
of the “Festausschuss Bonner Karneval” a new era for Bonn
carnival started. And, as such, also the kind of “fifth season”
which is an event without which Rhinelanders can hardly
imagine life. The members of the Beethoven Orchestra are
also aware of this. With their virtuosity, they accompany and
thrill their audiences in many a form during carnival.
With not one, but two great series of events, Parkrestaurant
Rheinaue becomes the talk of the town from June to
August: “Jazz im Biergarten” and “Sommerfestival”. The
concerts of the GA summer garden take place in August,
Sundays, on the roof of the Bundeskunsthalle. “Kultur im Hof”
in Himmeroder Hof, in the heart of the historical centre of
Rheinbach, has fans in many different musical styles. The
Königssommer series of events in July/August in Königs -
winter has quite a lot in store in the in- and outdoor area:
for instance, the “7 Mountains Music Night” or the “Straßenmusikfestival”.
The “Internationalen Stummfilmtage” with live
music in the arcade court of Bonn University is always a
great hit. Particularly beautiful: the late-night performances.
“RockAue” is considered the successor of the popular
Rheinkultur with international, national and local rock, metal
and electronic music. At the “Siegtal-Festival”, with classic,
jazz, rock, theatre, cabaret and more, there is something for
everyone. Classic against a sublime backdrop, the UNESCO
world heritage sites of Augustusburg Castle and Falkenlust
Castle are on the programme at the “Brühler Schloss -
konzerte” between June and August. The “Green Juice-
Festival” in August attracts fans of rock music to the Beuel
district Vilich.
