Innovation by Deutsche Post DHL: The “package-copter” is an unmanned
flying device, of which packages can be transported.
across the globe. 45 cargo aircrafts have about 700 flights in
Europe per week; on German streets, about 1,800 TNT
vehicles are on the road.
The future of logistics
The future of logistics is also at home in Troisdorf. In the
“DHL Innovation Center”, Deutsche Post DHL Group busies
itself with the transportation of tomorrow and the day thereafter.
In a variety of different “Trend Cubes”, the multi-cor -
porate enterprise presents logisticstrends of the coming five
to ten years. One “Trend Cube” casts light on the topic of
autonomous logistics. What can be seen: the “packagecopter”,
an unmanned flying device, by means of which
packages can be transported. Is this still all up in the air? Yes
and no. Because there already was a pilot project: in 2015,
in about 40 flights, the “package-copter” transported
medication and other urgently needed goods from the
mainland to the Island of Juist in the North Sea.
Another “Trend Cube” is dedicated to the topic of
“augmented reality”. DHL assumes that so-called “wearables”
will find their way into logistics in the coming years, for
instance in warehousing or also in workshops. Thus, this
refers to computer systems that are attached to the body of
the user during the specific event. An example in this regard
would be computer glasses, like “Google Glass”. When picking
the order, the skilled worker in the warehouse will have
a spectacle lens that shows him exactly where, on which
shelf, he will have to pick how many products. To do this, he
will not require a list and a pen or a barcode scanner and,
what is more, he will always have both hands free. As a result,
the work can be done more accurately and rapidly.
TNT also already relies on digital technology, for instance
with weighing and measuring systems, scanners and
automated sorting plants in warehouses or truck cockpits.
No matter which way one looks at it, Troisdorf is an inno -
vative logistics location. Because of this, also Agheera GmbH,
which is located there, busies itself with the future of
logistics – and in this regard, the keyword is “logistics 4.0” –
which is currently becoming highly topical. The small and
still young company has developed a mobile GPS unit that
uses a solar cell to supply it with electricity and is deployed,
for instance, on containers. By means of this, the exact
location of every container can be determined at any
time.
