others, by two excellence clusters in immunology and
mathematics, 13 joint research projects of the Federal
Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), 18 European
Research Council Grants as well as a BMBF research focal
point.
Evolution of the scientific region
The range of offers available at institutions of higher learning
has been expanded considerably in the past two decades,
with the founding of H-BRS at the locations Sankt Augustin,
Rheinbach and Hennef, the International University IUBH in
Bad Honnef, and the Alanus University of Arts and Social
Sciences in Alfter. The latter has a unique concept that is
found nowhere else in the whole of Germany: it connects
scientific content with philosophy and art. Since 2006, the
economic faculty has been educating the managers of
tomorrow – and teaches how the economy can be looked
at in a new way and developed sustainably. The business
administration course of studies has long since established
and distinguished itself: the Council for Sustainable Development
has already distinguished the study programme
with the “Werkstatt N” hallmark of quality four times. What is
more, persons interested in economically-aligned subjects
will also find a number of different degree programmes at
the University of the Sparkassen Finance Group, which came
into being in 2003, after the Deutsche Sparkassen- und
Giroverband (German Savings Banks and Clearing House
