Nature and art along the Museum Mile
Meanwhile, father Hansen and his son have returned to
Bonn by train. They would like to visit two museums, which
are strung like pearls on a necklace along the famous
“Museum Mile”. Mr Hansen would like to visit the Kunst -
museum Bonn (Bonn Museum of Modern Art). He is es -
pecially interested in August Macke and the Rhenish Im -
pressionists. Which is why he would like to go to the city
centre later on to visit the former residential house and
studio house of August Mackes. However, it is currently
closed. And this for good reason: in the autumn of 2017 it is
to be opened again, following comprehensive modernisation
and extension work. In the future, the completed ensemble
will consist of an authentic artist’s house, with an extension
that offers space for all changing exhibitions and
museum-specific exhibitions.
Following the visit to the Kunstmuseum, the son is allowed
to decide where to go next. The two remain on the Museum
Mile and discover the Zoological Research Museum Koenig.
By the way, history was written here, just as is the case at
Petersberg: between 1948 and 1949, the Parliamentary
Council convened here, to elaborate the constitutional law
for the Federal Republic of Germany. President of the Par -
liamentary Council was Konrad Adenauer. The constitutional
law was signed in Bonn on 23 May 1949.
On the trail of fortresses and castles
On Sunday things get active once again. The Hansens rent
bicycles and set off on the so-called “Wasserburgen-Route”
(moated castles route). Of course they are only able to manage
a small part – because merely the main route of this
bicycle route covers a distance of about 470 kilometres
between Aachen, Bonn and Cologne, past 120 fortresses
and castles – through the region of Europe that has the
most moated castles in Europe. All the same, family Hansen
manages 50 kilometres and eight fortresses and castles,
among these “Burg Adendorf” and “Schloss Miel”. Early in the
evening, when they fall into their seats in the Intercity that
will return them to Bremen, the four are slightly exhausted
but happy.
