Check 6 – Shear and bearing capacity of cleats connected to column
Shear
The basic check is that the shear capacity of the leg of the angle cleat
(Pv) must be greater than half the reaction at the end of the beam
(Fv/2)

For shear the following three checks should be considered:
• shear capacity of the gross section
• shear capacity of the net section
• block shear
Shear capacity of the gross section
The shear capacity of the gross section is given by the following
expression:
Pv = 0.6pyAv
where py is the design strength of the angle
Av is the shear area of the angle
For an 8 mm angle
py = 275 N/mm 2
