Ronald E. McNair <strong>Graduate</strong> Assistantship Program: <strong>UF</strong> provides<br />

a limited number of 1-year research assistantships for McNair<br />

scholars who are entering a Ph.D. program at this institution. It<br />

provides a stipend ($12,000), full tuition, fees, and health insurance<br />

for only the first year of the Ph.D. It assists students who have<br />

successfully completed the McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement<br />

Program as undergraduates. It is open to all McNair Scholars in<br />

good standing. The student will be appointed and perform research<br />

assistant duties under faculty supervision. Since this program is<br />

intended to increase enrollment in PhD programs, currently enrolled<br />

doctoral students are not eligible. Interested students who meet the<br />

AC-SBES Alliance: The University of Florida is a participant in the<br />

Atlantic Coast--Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Alliance<br />

(AC--SBES) grant, which is funded by the National Science<br />

Foundation. The Alliance seeks to increase the number of<br />

underrepresented minority (URM) students receiving Ph.D. degrees<br />

in SBES disciplines and to increase the number of URMs entering<br />

the SBE professoriate. Through the Alliance, <strong>UF</strong> works<br />

collaboratively with Howard University, the University of Maryland at<br />

College Park, the University of Miami, and the University of North<br />

Carolina at Chapel Hill to broaden participation of URM doctoral<br />

students in SBE doctoral programs. The AC--SBES Alliance provides<br />

a limited number of stipends to incoming doctoral students,<br />

research stipends for AC--SBES scholars, summer bridging and<br />

retention programs, and travel awards for AC-SBES scholars.<br />

Stipends are competitively awarded based on recommendations by<br />

Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship: The Bridge to the Doctorate<br />

(BD) Grant was awarded to <strong>UF</strong> by the National Science Foundation<br />

through the Florida-Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority<br />

Participation (FG-LSAMP) to enhance recruitment and retention of<br />

underrepresented minority students in Science, Technology,<br />

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The BD provides<br />

$30,000 per year for the first two years of doctoral studies for<br />

former LSAMP students who are entering Ph.D. programs after<br />

completing baccalaureate degrees. In addition, the grant provides<br />

funds for the same two years for each BD student's cost of<br />
