GMS 6160: Introduction to Oral Biology I (2) Review of basic<br />

principles of prokaryotic and eukaryotic molecular biology, gene<br />

therapy, stem cell biology, and tissue engineering and the<br />

application of those principles to study of normal and abnormal<br />

conditions of oral cavity.<br />

GMS 6161: Introduction to Oral Biology II (2) Prereq: GMS<br />

6160 or consent of instructor. Review of current information on<br />

psychophysiology and biology of oral pain; oral infectious diseases;<br />

oral ramifications of inflammation, hypersensitivities, and immune<br />

deficiencies; bone disorders; and oral health in normal aging.<br />

GMS 6173: Stomatognathic System: Form and Function (2)<br />

Anatomy and function of head and neck muscles,<br />

temporomandibular joints, and salivary glands. Normal and<br />

abnormal mastication, deglutition, speech, and oral sensorimotor<br />

measures.<br />

GMS 6176: Biology of Tooth Supporting Structures I (1) Coreq:<br />

BCH 6740 or consent of instructor. Organization, vasculature, and<br />

innervation of the periodontium; chemistry; biosynthesis,<br />

biophysics, and degradation of collagen; studies of other associated,<br />

unique proteins.<br />

GMS 6177: Biology of Tooth Supporting Structures II (1)<br />

Prereq: GMS 6176; or consent of instructor. Coreq: BCH 6207.<br />

Development and function of the periodontal ligament; organization,<br />

development, biophysics, and biochemistry of bone; calcification<br />

mechanisms and bone remodeling; effects of hormones and<br />

nutrients on bone.<br />

GMS 6193: Research Conference in Oral Biology (1 or 3; max:<br />

8) Required of graduate students in oral biology; open to others by<br />

departmental approval. Critical discussion and appraisal of current<br />

research in the department by students and faculty. S/U.<br />

GMS 7179: Journal Colloquy (1; max: 8) Critical presentation<br />

and discussion of recent original journal articles in the oral biology<br />

literature.<br />
