Master of Arts degree in art education: The <strong>School</strong> offers the<br />

M.A. in art education. In addition to meeting requirements of the<br />

<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> for admission, prospective students should:<br />

--Hold a degree in studio art, art history, or art education<br />

--Send up to 10 images of original works of art (on CD or in slide<br />

form) and a research paper, article, or other sample of academic<br />

writing<br />

--Send up to 10 images or photographs of student art work and a<br />

sample of curriculum materials if available<br />

--Submit three current letters of recommendation.<br />

The M.A. in art education requires a minimum of 36 credit hours.<br />

ARE 6047 and ARE 6148 are required. The basic plan of study<br />

includes 3 credits of an approved art education elective; 9 credits in<br />

studio courses; 3 credits in art history; 6 credits in art history,<br />

studio, art education, or education electives; 3 credits of ARE 6705;<br />

and 3 credits of ARE 6971 or ARE 6973. To be admitted to<br />

candidacy, students must pass a comprehensive examination at the<br />

beginning of the second year. The program culminates in an oral<br />

examination on the thesis or project in lieu of thesis.<br />

Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in art<br />

history: The <strong>School</strong> offers graduate programs leading to the M.A.<br />

and Ph.D. degrees. For complete details of the M.A. and Ph.D.<br />

degree requirements, see the art history graduate adviser. Art<br />

history students may participate in courses offered by the State<br />

University System's programs in Paris, London, and Florence. Other<br />

study-abroad programs may be approved by the director of<br />

graduate studies.<br />

For the M.A. degree, the <strong>School</strong> offers areas of emphasis in Ancient,<br />

Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, Modern, and non-Western art<br />

history (including African, Asian, and Oceanic). A minimum of 36<br />

credit hours is required: ARH 5815 (3 credits), 27 hours of course<br />

work, and ARH 6971 (6 credits). Required course work includes a<br />

minimum of 15 hours with 5 different art history <strong>Graduate</strong> Faculty<br />

(at least 12 hours of this course work must be graduate-level<br />

seminars). Nine credits may be taken in related areas with the<br />

graduate program adviser's approval. Reading proficiency in a<br />

foreign language appropriate to the major area of study must be<br />

demonstrated before thesis research is begun. Language courses<br />

cannot apply toward degree credit.<br />

For the Ph.D. degree, the <strong>School</strong> offers the same areas of<br />

specialization as for the M.A. degree. Up to 30 credits from the M.A.<br />

degree may apply toward the 90 credit Ph.D. degree. A program of<br />

60 credit hours beyond the M.A. degree is required. Core courses
