University of Florida <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

Additional requirements for both options are as follows:<br />

— 2 required gateway seminars: LAS 6220, Issues and Perspectives in Latin American<br />

Studies and LAS 6293, Design and Methods of Research in Latin American Studies;<br />

ideally, both seminars are taken in the first semester;<br />

— 9 credits of Latin American area or language courses outside the specialization;<br />

and<br />

— Intermediate proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole; and<br />

— An interdisciplinary thesis on a Latin American topic.<br />

Although the M.A. degree in Latin American studies is a terminal degree, many past<br />

recipients have entered the Ph.D. programs in related disciplines preparing for<br />

university teaching and research careers. Other graduates are employed in the<br />

Foreign Service, educational and research institutions, international organizations,<br />

government or nonprofit agencies, and private companies in the United States and<br />

Latin America.<br />

Requirements for admission to the program are:<br />

— A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university;<br />

— Grade point average of at least 3.2 for all upper-division undergraduate work;<br />

— Acceptable scores on the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examination;<br />

— For international students, a satisfactory score on one of the following: TOEFL<br />

(Test of English as a Foreign Language: computer=213, paper=550, web=80), IELTS<br />

(International English Language Testing System: 6), MELAB (Michigan English<br />

Language Assessment Battery: 77), or successful completion of the <strong>UF</strong> English<br />

Language Institute Program;<br />

— Basic knowledge of either Spanish or Portuguese; some Latin American course<br />

work.<br />

Juris Doctor/Master of Arts program: This joint degree culminates in the Juris<br />

Doctor degree awarded by the College of Law and the Master of Arts degree in Latin<br />

American studies awarded by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The joint<br />

degrees can be completed in four years rather than the five years required if earning<br />

each degree separately.<br />

Candidates for the joint program must be admitted to both academic units. See<br />

<strong>Graduate</strong> Certificates in Latin American Studies: <strong>Graduate</strong> students may earn a<br />

Certificate in Latin American Studies along with a degree from the College of<br />

Agricultural and Life Sciences; Business Administration; Design, Construction, and<br />

Planning; Education; Fine Arts; Journalism and Communications; Law; or Liberal Arts<br />

and Sciences.<br />
