Prospective students should examine the research interests of the<br />

Sociology <strong>Graduate</strong> Faculty to obtain a more detailed sense of<br />

fellowship support are due January 15th of each year. Students<br />

planning to apply for admission should take the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record<br />

SYA 5933: Special Study in Sociology (3; max: 6)<br />

SYA 6018: Classical Social Theories (3) Sociological theory from<br />

its inception in the early 19th century to about 1930. The ideas of<br />

Comte, Spencer, Marx, Weber, Simmel, Durkheim, Pareto, Mead,<br />

and others.<br />

SYA 6126: Contemporary Sociological Theory (3) The study of<br />

modern sociological theories, roughly 1930 to the present.<br />

SYA 6305: Methods in Social Research I (3) Survey of<br />

quantitative and qualitative methods of social research, design, and<br />

data collection.<br />

SYA 6306: Methods in Social Research II (3) Prereq: SYA 6305.<br />

Evaluation and completion of topics and projects from SYA 6305.<br />

SYA 6315: Qualitative Research Methods (3) Fieldwork,<br />

observation, participant observation, and other qualitative datacollection<br />

and analysis techniques.<br />

SYA 6327: Research Problems in Deviance (3) Survey of<br />

substantive issues related to data sources, analysis methods, and<br />

specific research areas.<br />

SYA 6407: Quantitative Research Methods (3) Prereq: STA<br />

6126. Applying selected quantitative methods to sociological<br />

research problems. Extensive practice applying the methods.<br />

SYA 6905: Individual Work (1-4; max: 3 for M.A. and 6 for<br />

post-M.A.) Work on subjects not available in currently offered<br />

courses.<br />

SYA 6910: Supervised Research (1-5; max: 5) S/U.<br />

SYA 6942: Applied Social Research Project (3) Supervised<br />

individual or team applied research project.<br />

SYA 6971: Research for Master's Thesis (1-15) S/U.<br />

SYA 7135: Sociology of Knowledge (3) Variations in the social<br />

origin of knowledge and knowledge systems.<br />

SYA 7935: Advanced Study in Sociology (3; max: 6) Prereq:<br />

M.A. or equivalent degree in sociology.<br />

SYA 7979: Advanced Research (1-12; max: 24, including SYA<br />

7980, may be counted in 90 hours) Research for doctoral<br />

students before admission to candidacy. Designed for students with<br />

a master's degree in the field of study or for students who have<br />

been accepted for a doctoral program. Not appropriate for students<br />

who have been admitted to candidacy. S/U.<br />

SYA 7980: Research for Doctoral Dissertation (1-15; max: 24,<br />

including SYA 7979, may be counted in 90 hours) S/U.<br />

SYD 6436: Metropolitan Growth and Development (3) Prereq:<br />
