mathematics curriculum; practices in teaching mathematics;<br />

preparing, selecting, and using instructional materials; assessment<br />

MAE 5347: Teaching K-8 Mathematics for Understanding (3)<br />

Prereq: MAE4310 or consent of instructor. Instructional strategies to<br />

support young learners' mathematical understanding.<br />

MAE 5395: Multicultural Mathematics Methods (3) Prereq: MAE<br />

4310 or MAE 5318. Mathematics education methods from a<br />

multicultural perspective.<br />

MAE 5945: Secondary <strong>School</strong> Mathematics Practicum (3; max:<br />

6) Directed experiences emphasizing instructional strategies,<br />

selecting instructional materials, sequencing student activities, using<br />

instructional moves, and diagnosing student progress. Field and<br />

laboratory settings.<br />

MAE 6313: Problem Solving in <strong>School</strong> Mathematics (3) Analyzes<br />

problem solving as an underlying theme in elementary mathematics<br />

for preservice teachers. Emphasizes development of pedagogical<br />

content knowledge in elementary school mathematics.<br />

MAE 6615: Individualizing Instruction in Mathematics (3)<br />

Organizing a continuous progress program: objectives, diagnostic<br />

testing, student placement, record keeping, evaluation, and<br />

reporting. The role of the teacher and team teaching. Developing a<br />

bank of materials, games, and activities for an individualized<br />

mathematics program.<br />

(3; max: 6) Examines readings and research that represent past,<br />

current, and future trends.<br />
