Chair: P. A. Mueller. Graduate Coordinator: J. M. Jaeger. Complete
faculty listing by department: Follow this link
The Department of Geological Sciences offers programs leading to
the Master of Science (thesis), the Master of Science in Teaching
(nonthesis), and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees in geology.
Requirements for these degrees are described in the General
Information section of this catalog.
The Department has identified six primary areas of emphasis in its
research and teaching programs: environmental geology and
hydrology, paleoclimatology, tectonophysics, geochemistry and
mineralogy/petrology, marine and coastal geology, and
paleomagnetism. For more detailed information on current
departmental activities, faculty, and research centers, see
http://web.geology.ufl.edu. The Department has collaborative,
interdisciplinary programs of study and research with the Florida
Museum of Natural History, the Center for Wetlands Research, the
Land Use and Environmental Change Institute (L.U.E.C.I.), and the
hydrological sciences cluster.
For admission to graduate status in the Department of Geological
Sciences, a student must have a baccalaureate degree with a major
in geology or a related field or its equivalent. Deficiencies in
undergraduate preparation can be corrected by completing the
undergraduate courses without credit while enrolled as a graduate
student.
