communities. The minor consists of six hours of study. Prospective
graduate students need not have majored in family, youth, and
community sciences as an undergraduate. Students with an
insufficient background in relevant social sciences will need to
include basic courses in their programs of study. Students are
encouraged to complete course work outside the department in
relevant areas, selecting appropriate courses in close consultation
with their supervisory committees.
The department offers a combined bachelor's/master's program and
a joint degree program with the Levin College of Law. The
Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences offers three
concentrations which appear on the student's transcript alerting
employers to the student’s expertise and skills and helping
employers identify those graduates who are particularly well
positioned to work in these areas.
A community studies concentration provides students with the
specific knowledge and skills they need to provide professional
guidance for community-based organizations in order to effectively
mobilize the community, resolve intra-community conflicts, develop
responsive organizations within the community, and identify,
marshal and use the resources that are available to communities.
A concentration is also available in family and youth development
which prepares students to work with youth and families through
community-based programs. The concentration combines the study
of theories of family and youth development with courses that help
students develop the skills needed to offer programs and give
leadership to public and private sector organizations serving youth
and families.
The nonprofit organizations development concentration prepares
students to work with tax-exempt and informal community-based
organizations that serve a charitable purpose for the public good.
The concentration courses provide an in-depth understanding for
developing and sustaining an efficient and effective nonprofit
organization which includes competencies in governance, strategic
planning, fund raising, risk management, financial planning, and
other tools.
