LIN 6402: Morphology (3) Prereq: LIN 3460. Theory of word<br />

structure, derivation, and inflection. The position of morphology in a<br />

grammar, the relationship between morphology and the rest of the<br />

grammar, predictions of various theories of morphology. Examples<br />

and problems from a wide variety of the world's languages.<br />

LIN 6410: Issues in Morphology (3) Prereq: LIN 6402. Technical<br />

articles from a variety of twentieth-century schools. Prominent<br />

inquiries include the place of morphology in grammar, its<br />

relationship with other components, and whether a unified theory of<br />

morphology can be constructed.<br />

LIN 6501: Syntax (3) Prereq: LIN 3460. The generativetransformational<br />

model of syntax: phrase structure, lexicon, case<br />

and agreement, movement, government, and anaphora. Emphasiezs<br />

problem solving and linguistic argumentation.<br />

LIN 6520: Issues in Syntax (3) Prereq: LIN 6501. Further<br />

investigation of the generative-transformational model of syntax:<br />

advanced clause structure, binding theory, constraints on<br />

movement, and logical form.<br />

LIN 6562: Discourse Grammar (3) Prereq: LIN 6501. Recent<br />

developments in studying the relationships between sentence<br />

grammar and discourse. Subject and theme, relativization and<br />

subordination, pronoun and anaphora, transitivity, tense and aspect,<br />

information structure, and discourse basis for grammatical<br />

categories. Synthesis of topics into a systematic framework.<br />

LIN 6571: Structure of Specific Language (3) Prereq:<br />

introductory linguistics course. Linguistic examination of Aymara,<br />

Cakchiquel, Eskimo, Armenian, Bulgarian, Polish, Turkish, Quechua,<br />

Sanskrit, Tamil, or another rarely taught language.<br />

LIN 6642: Psychological Linguistics(3) Scientific study of<br />

language as expressive behavior. Detailed examination of<br />

experimental research on linguistic and paralinguistic correlates of<br />

personality.<br />

LIN 6804: Semantics I(3) Truth conditional semantics as opposed<br />

to pragmatics. Basic notions in classical logic since logic is assumed<br />

in truth conditional semantics.<br />
