PCB 5046C: Advanced Ecology (3) Prereq: basic ecology and one<br />

course in statistics; physics, chemistry, and physiology desirable.<br />

Ecological research skills, emphasizing design of field studies and<br />

data analysis. Offered fall term in odd-numbered years.<br />

PCB 5338: Principles of Ecosystem Ecology (3) Prereq: BSC<br />

<strong>2010</strong> or BSC <strong>2011</strong>, and PCB 3034C or PCB 4044C. Examines<br />

principles that govern the structure and function of terrestrial<br />

ecosystems. Ecosystem Ecology is the study of flows of energy and<br />

materials between organisms and their environment.<br />

PCB 5356: Tropical Ecology (3) Prereq: elementary biology or<br />

consent of instructor. Global overview of tropical environments,<br />

natural history, biological communities, and their structure and<br />

function. Addresses basic and applied ecological issues in the<br />

tropics.<br />

PCB 6176: Electron Microscopy of Biological Materials (2)<br />

Prereq: MCB 3020 or equivalent. Use of the electron microscope,<br />

including fixation, embedding, sectioning, freeze-etching, negative<br />

staining, and use of vacuum evaporator.<br />

PCB 6176L: Laboratory in Electron Microscopy (2) Coreq: PCB<br />

6176 and consent of instructor. Laboratory training in using electron<br />

microscopes, ultramicrotomes, vacuum evaporators, and freeze-etch<br />

machines.<br />

PCB 6605C: Principles of Systematic Biology (4) Theory of<br />

biological classification and taxonomic practice. Laboratory<br />

experience in taxonomic procedures and techniques, including<br />

computer methods. Offered spring term in even-numbered years.<br />
