Combined programs: The <strong>School</strong> offers a combined<br />

bachelor's/master's degree program, which allows qualified students<br />

to earn both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree with a<br />

savings of 1 semester. Ph.D. students may pursue a co-major with<br />

the Department of Statistics (see below).<br />

Concentration in geomatics: Students completing 15 or more<br />

credits with an SUR designation, as part of an SFRC graduate<br />

degree, may earn the concentration in geomatics. Geomatics is the<br />

collection, analysis, and management of spatial information and<br />

includes such fields as surveying, mapping, land tenure, cadastral<br />

systems, geographic information systems, and remote sensing.<br />

Statistics co-major: Ph.D. students with the <strong>School</strong> may elect the<br />

co-major offered jointly with the Department of Statistics. Students<br />

focusing on forest genetics, tree improvement, and other statisticsintensive<br />

aspects of natural resource management are potential<br />

candidates for this option.<br />

Certificates: The <strong>School</strong> administers the <strong>Graduate</strong> Certificate in<br />

Agroforestry, and SFRC students regularly earn certificates in<br />

Geographic Information Systems and in Environmental Education<br />

and Communication. Requirements are described under<br />

Interdisciplinary <strong>Graduate</strong> Certificates and Concentrations in this<br />

catalog.<br />

FNR 5072C: Environmental Education Program Development<br />

(3) Comprehensive approach, from needs assessment to evaluation,<br />

applied to youth-based, nonformal environmental education.<br />

Required field trip and group project. Offered fall term of oddnumbered<br />

years.<br />

FNR 5335: Agroforestry (3) Biological, ecological, socioeconomic,<br />

and technical-managerial aspects of tree/crop, tree/animal, and<br />

tree/crop/animal systems. Examples of traditional and modern,<br />

rotational, and intercropped systems, and analyses of their<br />

structure, functioning, and potentials, with special reference to the<br />

tropics and subtropics. Offered spring term.<br />

FNR 5462: Spatial Models and Decision Analysis () Prereq: FOR<br />

3434C, basic statistics, or instructor permission. Environmental<br />

modeling in a spatial context using descriptive and prescriptive tools<br />

and spatial reasoning.<br />

FNR 5608: Research Planning (3) Prereq: consent of instructor.<br />

Required for all new M.S. students. History and philosophy of<br />

science, scientific method, development of a research proposal.
