consent of instructor. Theory, history, and practice of translation,<br />

focusing on approaches to acquisition of translational skills.<br />

FOT 6811C: Terminology and Computer-Assisted<br />

Translation(3) Prereq: FOT 6805. Theoretical and practical aspects<br />

of terminology management and computer-assisted translation<br />

(CAT). Training in computer-assisted translation, including use of<br />

CAT tools.<br />

FOT 6815: Translation for the Professions(3) Prereq: FOT 6805.<br />

Technical, contractual, film, multi-media, and medical translation.<br />

FOT 6940: Translation Studies Practicum(3) Prereq: FOT 6805.<br />

Patterns and trends of tropical resource use and conservation<br />

analyzed against sustainability criteria. Socioeconomic, biological,<br />

and political factors addressed with emphasis on global linkages.<br />

LAS 6291: Conservation and Development Skills(3; max: 6)<br />

Development of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills<br />

necessary for conservation and development professionals.<br />

Professional presentations, facilitation, workshop organization, and<br />

negotiation skills.<br />

LAS 6292: Tropical Conservation and Development Research<br />

Methods (3; max: 6) Introduction to field research methods for<br />

studies focused on natural resource use and management by local<br />

populations in tropical regions. Emphasizes participatory approaches<br />

and integration of natural and social science tools.<br />

LAS 6293: Design and Methods of Research in Latin American<br />

Studies (3 ) Readings and exercises introducing the main<br />

quantitative and qualitative strategies that social scientists use to<br />

carry out research in Latin America.<br />

LAS 6295: Latin American Business Environment (2) Prereq:<br />

M.B.A. core. Examination of the contemporary political economy of<br />

Latin America from a business perspective. Analysis of economic,<br />

social, political, and cultural factors affecting business and finance in<br />

the region. Special attention to recent market reforms and regional<br />

integration.<br />

LAS 6296: Latin American Business Topics (2-4; max: 4)<br />

Prereq: M.B.A. core and LAS 6295. Examination of various<br />

economic, management, finance, and legal topics affecting business<br />

and finance in Latin America.<br />

LAS 6905: Individual Work (1-3; max: 9) Reading or research in<br />

topics focusing on a Latin American area, but cutting across<br />

disciplines.
