The Department of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences offers<br />

two graduate social science degrees. The Master of Science in<br />

Family, Youth, and Community Sciences is a research degree that<br />

prepares students to conduct original research about problems,<br />

issues, and policies affecting families, youth, and communities. The<br />

Master of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences prepares<br />

students for mid-level leadership positions in public and private<br />

organizations, agencies, and businesses that address the needs of<br />

families, youths, and communities. Descriptions of the requirements<br />

for the M.S. and M.F.Y.C. degrees are provided in the General<br />

Information section of this catalog.<br />

A minor in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences provides<br />

students from other areas with knowledge about the theories and<br />

body of research that explain how families, youths, and<br />

communities develop and interact. The programs emphasize an<br />

ecological model in which the interactions and relationships among<br />

the individual, the family, and the community form the framework<br />

for addressing the issues, problems, and policies that affect youths,<br />

families, and communities in the United States and globally.<br />

The minor in Not-for-Profit Organizations provides students from<br />

other disciplines with an understanding of how to develop<br />

organizations to address problems facing families, youth, and
