SYP 6065: Sociology of Human Sexuality (3) Theoretical and<br />

conceptual issues, empirical research, and social policies germane to<br />

human sexuality. U.S. sexual identity and orientation. Sexuality<br />

from childhood to later years of life. Sexual behavior in and out of<br />

committed relationships. Incest. Social control of sexuality, including<br />

prostitution and pornography. Social implications of STIs and<br />

HIV/AIDS. Coercive sexuality. Gender relations and sexuality.<br />

Relationship between sexuality and the sociopolitical process.<br />

SYP 6115: Seminar in Symbolic Interaction (3) A sociological<br />

perspective on the self, with special emphasis on the role of<br />

language, symbols, and culture in relation to identity, socialization,<br />

and social structure.<br />

SYP 6515: Deviance (3) Advanced study of theoretical and<br />

empirical literature on deviance and its social construction.<br />

SYP 6517: Theories of Crime and Deviance (3) Review and<br />

critique of major social and behavioral theories of crime,<br />

delinquency, and deviance.<br />

SYP 6545: Sociology of Law (3) Sociological perspective on law<br />

and control in society, development of law, operation of the legal<br />

system, the legal profession, social change, power and conflict, and<br />

the impact of law and legal sanctions and society.<br />

SYP 6735: Sociology of Aging and the Life Course (3) Social<br />

and personal conditions of post-retirement years. Family and<br />

housing patterns, income, leisure, health, group processes, and<br />

evaluation of institutional care of the aged.<br />

SYP 6736: Sociology of the Aged (3) Major sociological issues<br />

and concepts related to aging and the aged. Social stratification,<br />

family, social norms, social networks, and community. Economic<br />

security, health, housing, and retirement.<br />

SYP 6745: Aging and End-of-Life Issues (3) An exploration of<br />

dying well in old age from multiple perspectives, including sociology,<br />

psychology, biology, medical sciences, ethics, history,<br />

spirituality/religion, and economics.<br />
