Prereq: consent of instructor. Overview of a broad range of neural<br />

disorders emphasizing genetically determined conditions.<br />

GMS 6760: Comparative Biology of Cell Signaling (2) Prereq:<br />

GMS 6001 or consent of coordinator. Overview of the principles<br />

governing cellular and molecular signaling in the nervous system.<br />

Introduction to novel experimental approaches and non-mammalian<br />

preparations used to explore these principles.<br />

GMS 6791: Visual Neuroscience Journal Club (1; max: 2)<br />

Prereq: 1st-year IDP core course; or consent of instructor.<br />

seminars given by local, national, and occasionally international<br />

GMS 7795: Special Topics in Neuroscience (1-4; max: 12)<br />

Specialized subjects in the neurosciences and allied disciplines.<br />

Current topics include biological imaging techniques, fundamentals<br />

of computational neuroscience, graduate research seminar series,<br />

write clubs, scientific communication workshop (Whitney Lab), and<br />

electrophysiological journal club (Whitney Lab).<br />

The <strong>Graduate</strong> Faculty associated with this advanced concentration<br />

have expertise in a variety of disciplines, including molecular and<br />

cellular biology, pharmacology, physiology, neuroscience, and<br />

biochemistry. These faculty bring together unique strengths to<br />

provide the students with diverse training. Students may train in<br />

laboratories involved in cardiovascular, neuro, endocrine, and<br />

developmental physiology; pharmacology; and toxicology. Students<br />

conduct research at the molecular, cellular, and integrative levels.<br />

Many of the faculty are involved in multidisciplinary, collaborative<br />

research efforts that aim to understand basic physiological<br />

mechanisms and pathophysiological processes (e.g., cardiovascular,<br />

neurodegenerative, and neoplastic diseases).<br />

GMS 6051: Signal Transduction (1) Prereq: GMS 6001 or consent<br />

of instructor. Focuses on the mechanisms underlying cellular signal
