Master of Fine Arts degree: The school offers the M.F.A. degree in<br />

art with specializations in ceramics, creative photography, drawing,<br />

painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, and digital media.<br />

Enrollment is competitive and limited. Candidates for admission<br />

should have adequate undergraduate training in art. Deficiencies<br />

may be corrected before beginning graduate study. Applicants must<br />

submit a portfolio for admission consideration. A minimum of 3<br />

years residency is normally needed to complete the requirements<br />

for this degree, which for studio students culminates with an M.F.A.<br />

exhibition.<br />

The M.F.A. requires a minimum of 60 credit hours: 24 hours must<br />

be in an area of specialization. Normal course requirements include:<br />

--12 hours of studio electives outside the area of specialization<br />

--6 hours of art history electives<br />

--3 hours of aesthetics, theory, or criticism<br />

--6 hours of electives<br />

--6 hours of individual project or thesis research.<br />

Although the M.F.A. is a thesis degree, students usually produce a<br />

creative project in lieu of thesis. Students should see the graduate<br />

program adviser for the <strong>School</strong>'s requirements for the creative<br />

project. (Students electing to write a thesis must discuss the<br />

reasons with the graduate program adviser and the supervisory
