The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences offers academic<br />

programs and grants advanced degrees in 17 departments and the<br />

<strong>School</strong>s of Forest Resources and Conservation, and Natural<br />

Resources and Environment. These academic units are all a part of<br />

the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Additional<br />

components of IFAS include 16 research centers located throughout<br />

the state and cooperative extension offices in each of the 67<br />

counties of the state.<br />

The following courses are offered under the supervision of the office<br />

of the dean by an interdisciplinary faculty and deal with material of<br />

concern to two or more IFAS academic units. The courses are also<br />

open to students of other colleges, with the permission of the<br />

course instructor.<br />

ALS 5036: Contemporary Issues in Science (2) Current issues in<br />

science as related to students pursuing scientific careers. Discussion<br />

topics focus on issues of graduate education, funding for science,<br />

job markets, scientific research ethics, publication, and job<br />

expectations. Offered spring term. S/U.<br />

ALS 5106: Food and the Environment (3) Relationship between<br />

food production and consumption and environmental quality.<br />

Scientific merits of controversies about impact of food production on<br />

environment and of different production strategies and practices.<br />

Biodiversity, water quality, soil resources, ecological economics, and<br />

energy use in food production. Taught interactively on Internet in
