politics in comparative perspective.
CPO 6307: Latin American Politics I (3) Prereq: knowledge of
Spanish or Portuguese; French may be substituted with consent of
instructor.
CPO 6732: Democratization and Regime Transition (3) Prereq:
CPO 6091. Review of structural, institutional, and cultural
dimensions of democratization, with special attention to Latin
America, Africa, and Eastern Europe.
CPO 6736: Post-Communist Politics (3) Analysis of problems
associated with democratic transition and market reform in the postcommunist
countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet
Union.
CPO 6786: Peasant Politics and Society (3) Analysis of social
organization and politics of the rural poor in Latin America, Africa,
Asia, and pre-industrial Europe.
CPO 6795: Environmental Politics (3) Explores a variety of
social-scientific approaches to the question of how politics (including
ideologies, institutions, interests, and power relationships) shape
humans' relationship with the natural environment.
CPO 6796: Water Politics (3) Interdisciplinary exploration of the
political dimensions of human manipulation of water, wetlands and
watersheds. Topics include large-scale hydrodevelopment, commonpool
resources, community-based water management,
marketization, and transboundary waters. Also provides a general
introduction to social-scientific theorizing on human-environment
relations.

INR 6036: Globalization, Regionalism, and Governance(3)
Analysis of interplay between globalization and regionalism, and
effects on governance.
INR 6039: International Political Economy (3)
INR 6213: Seminar: Politics of the European Union (3)
Predominant political and economic theories that explain and
prescribe regional economic cooperation. Sub-theories and models
of decision making in European Union. Processes of EU policy
making including agenda setting, policy formulation, and
implementation. EU legislation in selected policy areas. Salient
issues facing EU policy makers.
INR 6249: Inter-American Relations (3) Prereq: consent of
instructor. The main purpose of this course is to provide analytical
tools to understanding the historical evolution and current state of
Inter-American institutions and relations. The content tries to
balance theoretical analysis of some selected issues with empirical
studies on recent developments in Inter-American relations.
