consent of instructor. Social behavior among animals from the<br />

ethological-biological viewpoint; the evolution of animal societies;<br />

the relevance of the ethological approach for the study of human<br />

development.<br />

ANG 5620: Language and Culture (3) Principles and problems of<br />

anthropological linguistics. The cross-cultural and comparative study<br />

of language. Primarily concerned with the study of non-Indo-<br />

European linguistic problems.<br />

ANG 5621: Proseminar in Cultural and Linguistic<br />

Anthropology(3) History and theory of subfields of cultural and<br />

linguistic anthropology and their conceptual relationship to each<br />

other. Emphasis on current issues and their historical foundations.<br />

ANG 5700: Applied Anthropology (3) Survey of history, theory<br />

and practice of applying cultural anthropology to human issues and<br />

problems. Applications to international development, peace studies,<br />

health, education, agriculture, ethnic minority and human rights<br />

issues. Case review, including aspects of planning, consultancy<br />

work, evaluation research, and ethics.<br />

ANG 5701: Seminar on Applied Anthropology (3) Prereq: ANG<br />

5700 or consent of instructor. Consideration of planned sociocultural<br />

and technological change and development in the United<br />

States and abroad; special and cultural problems in the transferral<br />

of technologies; community development and aid programs.<br />

Comparative program evaluation.<br />

ANG 5702: Anthropology and Development (3) Examination of<br />

theories and development and their relevance to the Third World,<br />

particularly Africa or Latin America. After this microanalysis,<br />

microlevel development will be examined with special reference to<br />

rural areas.<br />

ANG 5711: Culture and International Business(3)<br />

Anthropological and business concepts and literature in local and<br />

global economies. Value, wealth, communication, business practices,<br />

marketing, advertising, corporate organization, entrepreneurship,<br />

multinationals, etc.<br />

ANG 5824L: Field Sessions in Archeology (6) Prereq: 6 hours of<br />

anthropology, or consent of instructor. Excavating archeological<br />

sites, recording data, laboratory handling and analysis of specimens,<br />

and studying theoretical principles that underlie field methods and<br />

artifact analysis. Not open to students who have taken ANT 4124 or<br />

equivalent.<br />

southeastern United States, emphasizing problem-oriented research<br />
