The Department offers an M.A. (with or without thesis) and a Ph.D.<br />

in German. Requirements for these degrees are given in the General<br />

Information section of this catalog.<br />

Prerequisite for admission to graduate work is an undergraduate<br />

major in the field, including advanced courses in both literature and<br />

language. Qualified candidates with B.A. degrees in related<br />

disciplines will be considered. Those students who wish to enter the<br />

Ph.D. program are expected to have an M.A. in German. M.A.<br />

degrees in related disciplines will be considered. A good foundation<br />

in a second language is desirable for M.A. candidates. Ph.D.<br />

candidates should consult the <strong>Graduate</strong> Coordinator for details on<br />

the foreign language requirement. <strong>Graduate</strong> students normally teach<br />

as a part of their training.<br />

German Language<br />

GER 6060: Beginning German for <strong>Graduate</strong> Students I (3) For<br />

graduate students from other departments who need to acquire a<br />

reading knowledge of German. Not open to graduate students in<br />

German. S/U.<br />

GER 6061: Beginning German for <strong>Graduate</strong> Students II (3)<br />
