aspects <strong>of</strong> themes overlapped so that they could be classified under one larger general<br />

category (L<strong>of</strong>land et al, 2006).<br />

For example, <strong>in</strong> relation to the first series <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews, after open cod<strong>in</strong>g I <strong>in</strong>itially emerged<br />

with 42 themes (listed <strong>in</strong> Appendix D). I read through the passages aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g areas <strong>of</strong> similarity and thematic overlap, narrow<strong>in</strong>g them down <strong>in</strong>to eleven<br />

ref<strong>in</strong>ed themes (see also Appendix D). I then repeated this process until I emerged with five<br />

master themes for analysis:<br />

Distance<br />

Intrusion<br />

Bodies<br />

Closeness<br />

Power<br />

Memos<br />

I have been mak<strong>in</strong>g memos almost cont<strong>in</strong>uously s<strong>in</strong>ce carry<strong>in</strong>g out the <strong>in</strong>terviews. As Krist<strong>in</strong><br />

Esterberg notes, memos can take „whatever format you like and feel most comfortable with‟<br />

(Esterberg, 2002:165). I have bought 14 spiral-bound notebooks, each with 72 blank pages,<br />

which I have filled with notes written <strong>in</strong> numerous situations: from short notes to myself<br />

made dur<strong>in</strong>g actual <strong>in</strong>terviews; to <strong>in</strong>terview summaries and records <strong>of</strong> physical spaces<br />

immediately follow<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>terview; to copious notes dur<strong>in</strong>g transcription relat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

comments made <strong>in</strong> one <strong>in</strong>terview to similar comments made <strong>in</strong> others and relat<strong>in</strong>g comments<br />

to theoretical <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong> books I have been read<strong>in</strong>g; to thoughts jotted down that have<br />

occurred to me while watch<strong>in</strong>g television, read<strong>in</strong>g the newspaper, wait<strong>in</strong>g for tra<strong>in</strong>s, dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tra<strong>in</strong> journeys, cook<strong>in</strong>g tea, walk<strong>in</strong>g the dog.<br />

Sett<strong>in</strong>g it out<br />

In the follow<strong>in</strong>g chapters where I have <strong>in</strong>cluded participants‟ statements taken from<br />

<strong>in</strong>terview transcriptions, I have identified the location <strong>of</strong> these <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview and l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

numbers. After quot<strong>in</strong>g a statement made by Roshni which can be located <strong>in</strong> the 24 th and<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> her first <strong>in</strong>terview, for example, I identify this <strong>in</strong> brackets at the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

quote.<br />
