differentiated responsibilities, national capacities and the legitimate aspirations<br />

of developing countries.<br />

They stressed the need for more ambitious goals in relation to the reduction<br />

of greenhouse gas emissions.<br />

They emphasized the importance of the work being done on long-term<br />

cooperation and on new commitments for the States Parties to Annex I of the<br />

Framework Convention.<br />

They underlined the need for developed countries to meet their<br />

commitments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change<br />

related to financing, technology transfer and capacity building in those<br />

developing countries most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change,<br />

in particular Small Island Developing States and low-lying coastal states, so<br />

as to assist them in addressing their needs in the areas of mitigation and<br />

adaptation, without conditionalities.<br />

15. In view of the severe global imbalance between energy supply and<br />

demand, they stressed the urgency of cooperation and complementarity, as<br />

well as regional integration in the field of energy.<br />

They highlighted the importance of conservation, energy savings and the<br />

efficient use of energy resources, in the light of the inter-relation between the<br />

issues of energy and climate change.<br />

They emphasized that the development of renewable sources of energy<br />

is important for attaining economic and social development, technological<br />

innovation and the generation of less contaminating types of energy with<br />

positive effects on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In this regard,<br />

they stressed the importance of assuring technology transfer and financing for<br />

research and development in renewable energies.<br />

16. They underlined the urgency of a successful conclusion of the World<br />

Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Round that would ensure the attainment of<br />

its development objectives through a balanced and equitable agreement on<br />

market access for agricultural and industrial goods. They recalled the need to<br />

respect the less than full reciprocity criterion and to ensure a space for<br />

developing countries to implement their industrial policies.<br />

They reiterated that developed countries must eliminate export subsidies<br />

for agricultural goods and effectively reduce subsidies for their agricultural<br />

producers. They condemned the abusive practice of granting agricultural<br />
