of the acts of independence of Latin American and Caribbean countries. They<br />

stressed that such actions contribute to raising awareness about their shared<br />

past as peoples of the Americas and to projecting a future in which they will<br />

be integrated in their diversity.<br />

20. They affirmed the importance of maintaining ongoing dialogue and<br />

cooperation, designed to confront common threats to the security of the<br />

countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, such as the world drug problem<br />

and transnational organized crime, in all their manifestations.<br />

21. They also affirmed the importance that dialogue and cooperation<br />

among the countries of Latin American and the Caribbean achieve tangible<br />

results and mutual benefits, consistent with the lofty aspirations of development<br />

and prosperity of their respective societies, based on the exchange of<br />

experiences and knowledge and supported by the accumulated heritage of<br />

existing regional institutions. They underlined the importance of promoting<br />

dialogue with other countries and regions of the world.<br />

22. The Heads of State and Government of Latin America and the<br />

Caribbean express their appreciation to the President of Brazil for the<br />

initiative to convene the Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean on<br />

Integration and Development held in the historic city of Salvador, Bahia,<br />

Brazil, on December 16 th and 17 th 2008, and underscore their gratitude<br />

to the Government and people of Brazil for the excellent hospitality and<br />

kind courtesy extended, which facilitated the successful outcome of the<br />

Summit.<br />

23. As a demonstration of their firm determination to accelerate further<br />

cooperation on the various issues on the common agenda and taking into<br />

account the principles of flexibility and voluntary participation in initiatives, the<br />

Heads of State and Government decided the following:<br />

1. Cooperation between the regional and sub-regional integration<br />

mechanisms<br />

• To intensify dialogue, interaction and synergies among the regional<br />

and sub-regional integration mechanisms of Latin America and the Caribbean<br />
