Background:
NAQUA (Center for Studies in Fish Farming), part
to the Department of Zootechnics - DZO of the
Federal University of Lavras - UFLA, was founded at
the beginning of 2000 at the initiative of professors
linked to the area, under the coordination of Professor
Priscila Vieira and Rosa. It initially comprised only
undergraduate and graduate students (masters
and doctoral) of the Zootechnics course and
mainly developed teaching through extracurricular
lectures and training activities for students focused
on research. As of 2002, professors and students
from other departments also became members,
strengthening and expanding the areas of knowledge
in fish farming and initiating extension activities.
The center currently carries out research in nutrition,
production, reproduction, meat technology, and
sanitation, among others related to fish farming. Its
members meet weekly to discuss activities related to
fish farming and professional training. Technical
visits and consulting services are regular activities.
It has successfully organized the annual Fish Day in
partnership with CEMIG (Minas Gerais Electric Power
Company) and EMATER, an event mainly geared
towards rural producers, bringing together dozens of
participants. In 2011, the center organized the Latin
American Conference on Native Fish Farming.
