Center for Studies in Semen and Embryo
Technology - GETESE
Núcleo de Estudos
Person in Charge:
Professor Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimo
zangeronimo@dmv.ufla.br
Institutional Information:
geteseufla@gmail.com
Background:
The group stemmed from the interest of
undergraduate and graduate students involved in
biotechnology of the swine breeding, supervised by
Professor Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimo. The group
has been working for over four years developing
research in this area. So far, several scientific
papers addressing the topic have been published.
In addition, the training of some members in Spain
enhanced the group with new technologies such as
in vitro fertilization and semen freezing, which has
increased the participation of students in national
events. In view of the above and the need to deepen
knowledge on the subject, the interest arose to
register the study group.
Overall Objectives:
To foster and aid studies in physiology of freshwater
fish species; to offer assistance services to aquaculture
producers; to apply biotechnologies in inducing fish
reproduction.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Reproductive Physiology: Studies of endocrine
controls involved in gametogenesis, gamete survival
and embryonic development.
2. Sperm Functionality: Understanding how the sperm
cell interacts with the environment and the main ways
of modulating those responses.
3. Oocyte maturation: Understanding the processes
involved in oocyte maturation in order to produce
means that allow efficient in vitro maturation.
4. In vitro production of swine embryos: Development
of the technique of in vitro production in swine.
