Background:

NECANA - Center for Sugarcane Studies, a benchmark

for study centers of the Federal University of Lavras

(UFLA), develops teaching, research and extension

activities in the area of sugar cane production. It

was founded in 2007 and comprises students of the

Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering courses,

coordinated by Professor Luiz Antônio de Bastos

Andrade. The center fosters research and extension

events aiming to spread information on the production

of sugar cane and derived products in Lavras and

surrounding region, always focusing on work

quality, efficiency and ethics. As the only study center

dedicated to the production of sugar cane, it stands

out from the others by the great theoretical expertise

of its members and the supervision of professors from

the Federal University of Lavras. It is a non-profit

organization, so no remuneration is expected from

services rendered to society.

Overall Objectives:

To enhance knowledge on sugar cane production,

besides bringing together students, professionals and

active producers with the purpose of fostering lectures,

debates, field work and other technical-scientific

events that may contribute to enhance knowledge in

this area .

Areas of Expertise:

1. Plant Studies: aspects related to soil preparation,

planting, crop handling, liming, fertilization, varieties

and harvesting.

2. Genetic Improvement: evaluation and selection of

sugar cane varieties for industry, spirits and forage.

3. Plant Production: aspects related to agribusiness

(sugar, alcohol and spirits).
