Background:
The Center for Studies in Management of
Conservation Units (NEUC) was founded in 2008 and
is headquartered in the Laboratory of Management
of Natural Protected Areas, in the Department of
Forestry Science, Federal University of Lavras. It is an
organization aimed at bringing together students,
professors and professionals interested in the
management and handling of nature conservation
units. NEUC encourages research, debate and
extension activities through regular events and the
sharing of experiences by its members. NEUC is a
center of studies open to the participation of the
entire community in its weekly working meetings.
The research and extension activities are developed by
participants of working groups (WG) divided by specific
themes and composed of center members. Currently,
NEUC develops seminars in partnership with other
study centers, does research in municipal, state and
federal conservation units, offers technical support to
landowners and governmental and non-governmental
organizations, and organizes the Symposium on
Management of Conservation Units - SIMUC
(national event). NEUC also seeks to contribute to the
personal development of its members, encouraging a
sustainable socio-environmental perspective.
Overall Objectives:
To bring together professionals and students in forest
engineering and related fields to develop studies,
lectures, courses and other events that may contribute
to the knowledge of the tree species Araucaria
angustifolia.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Management of nature conservation units:
Development of relevant technical reports for the
creation of conservation units; development of
management plans; research; organization of events.
2. Ecotourism and public use of natural areas: Events;
research; extension activities; survey of potentials;
training courses.
3. Participatory management of natural areas:
Diagnostics and participatory workshops; research.
4. Management of trails in natural environments:
Research; development of interpretative trails;
management for harmonization of trails in natural
environments; events and training courses.
