Institutional Information:

Background:
The study group in fermentation started its activities
over five years ago with the objective of stimulating
undergraduate students to get to know and discover the
various sub-areas of microbiology, and also stimulate
the intellectual acuity of the students involved in this
group. Currently the group holds biweekly meetings
to discuss topics on fermentation processes and
technological innovations for the fermentation of cocoa,
coffee, silage, as well as metabolic products generated
by microorganisms, microorganisms with potential
for bioremediation, among others. The study group
includes professors and undergraduate and graduate
students, comprising around 40 members. It annually
organizes lectures cycles and refresher courses, among
other activities.
Overall Objectives:
To expose undergraduate students to the different subareas
within microbiology; to evaluate and study cases
that involve fermentation processes, either spontaneous
or controlled; to organize courses and events for the
entire academic community; to stimulate undergraduate
and graduate students to develop critical reasoning.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Microbiology: Study of microorganisms and their role
in fermentation processes such as coffee, cocoa, silage.
2. Biotechnology: Study of new products and
metabolites generated by physiological processes of
microorganisms.
