Background:
The Center for Studies in Functional Foods (NEAF)
was founded in 2012 by students in nutrition and
food engineering and the course coordinator,
Professor Michel Cardoso De Angelis Pereira, with
the proposal of updating and expanding knowledge
about functional substances present in food and
their respective mechanisms of action. The center
holds weekly scientific meetings with its members to
contribute to enhancing the dissemination of related
knowledge. The center has already organized several
scientific events, as well as extension activities to spread
knowledge to the population, such as the creation of
vegetable gardens in schools, instruction on food and
nutrition in public and private schools, exhibition of
banners and distribution of leaflets in public places.
The center supports the moral and ethical training of
its undergraduate and graduate students. Learning
guidance is based on constructivist methods and
the intended results aim to benefit communities in
situations of social and economic vulnerability.
Overall Objectives:
To study functional foods and organize events and
activities that can contribute to the knowledge of
members and other professionals in the area of food
and nutrition, besides carrying out extension activities
with communities in general.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Nutrition: Teaching and research activities about
functional foods and their mechanisms of action in
the body.
2. Food: Studies on the composition and stability
of functional substances present in food and
ingredients.
3. Health Education: Activities integrating functional
foods with food and nutrition education.
4. Education in Health and Dietetics: Clinical care
and research studies and activities with groups of
vegetarians.
