Background:
The Center for Studies in Bioprocess Engineering
(NEEB) was founded in September 2014, when a
group of food engineering students sought help
from Professor José Guilherme Lembi Ferreira Alves,
of the Department of Food Science, to enhance their
knowledge of fermented beverages. NEEB comprises
10 undergraduate students in food engineering and
one graduate student in food science of the Federal
University of Lavras. It was created with the aim
of studying the various processes involved in the
production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages,
fermented foods, production of microorganisms,
enzymes, inputs and additives, such as flavorings,
acidulants and others products used in the food and
chemical industries. Its mission is to foster the study of
such processes and also organize events, mini-courses
and lectures for the entire academic community and
other interested parties, as well as develop extension
and research projects with the productive sectors of
society.
Overall Objectives:
To bring together professionals, students and
professors in the area of innovation applied to product
development, sensory evaluation, food technology and
food preservation.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Internal projects: In partnership with cooperatives
and companies, projects are developed to optimize
processes, develop new products and apply good
manufacturing practices.
2. Lectures and Mini-courses: Lectures and minicourses
are held in which students and participants
learn the theory and practice of the production of
different products obtained by fermentation.
3. Technical visits: These are carried out with the
purpose of learning the industrial process of products,
in addition to strengthening ties with companies and
producers of the bioprocess sector.
4. Internal training: Professional training of members
through courses with professors from the institution
and technicians from private companies.
