Background:
NEEC-FLORA (Center for Studies in Ecology and
Flora Conservation), coordinated by Professor Rubens
Manoel dos Santos, was founded in 2012 by members
of the Laboratory of Biodiversity Conservation and
Management of the Department of Forestry Science
of the Federal University of Lavras. Since then it has
developed activities that seek to enhance the training
of members of the academic community interested
in ecology and flora conservation. Throughout its
existence, NEEC-FLORA has held socially beneficent
events on themes relates to forestry science, such
as environmental impacts on Brazilian forests,
labor market for professionals wishing to work in
environmental areas, among others, and has also
held events aiming at bringing people in contact
with the daily routine of ecology work. For active
members, NEEC-FLORA has organized mini-courses
on subjects related to professional training, such
as species identification, statistics applied to flora
ecology, environmental education, among others. Over
the school semesters, the center has been improving
the knowledge of students related to different aspects,
seeking, above all, to contribute to the development of
forestry science from the point of view of ecology and
conservation.
Overall Objectives:
To enhance the professional and personal growth to its
members by creating an environment for debate and
proposals comprising: discussion of themes related
to forestry engineering; courses; consulting services;
technical visits; organize events; scientific studies and
reunions.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Ecology: Discussions on the functioning of
ecosystems and their importance.
2. Flora Conservation: Activities that address the
exuberance of the Brazilian flora and the need for its
conservation.
3. Dendrology: Identification of plant materials in
herbaria and in the field.
4. Environmental Education: Extension activities on
the theme of the environment in schools and related
organizations.
