Background:
The Silviculture Study Group (NES, Portuguese
acronym) was conceived by the undergraduate
student Raquel Oliveira Batista and founded in
February 2007. It was previously called GEVIF
(Study Group in Nurseries) and NECEF (Center for
Studies in Forestry Species). The first NES supervisor
was Professor Antônio Cláudio Davide, who ran
the group for seven years. At 2014, Professor Lucas
Amaral de Melo took over the supervision of the
group. Since its foundation, the group has enhanced
the knowledge of the academic community and also
of many producers through its events and technical
field trips. One of the first events held by the group
was a seminar, Eucalyptus culture Update, in 2011,
and the most recent were the Agroforestry Systems
as an alternative for sustainable development, 2016.
Its members regularly take part in events related to
forestry engineering, besides providing opportunities
for other stakeholders. The most recent course was at
2016, Precision Forest Management course. The group
has also helped society through projects developed in
the areas of teaching, research, and extension. Over
the years, the group has expanded its activities to serve
more people.
Overall Objectives:
To organize debates, events and educational work,
develop research and offer technical support, as well as
foster the training and development of undergraduate
and graduate students in the areas of teaching,
research and extension, in topics related to the
conservation and management of protected natural
areas.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Teaching: Organization of lectures, presentation of
articles and news, mini-courses and technical visits,
assisting the learning process of members and UFLA
students.
2. Research: Experiments in the field and at the UFLA
Forest Nursery.
3. Extension: Extension projects in development (field,
schools, rural environments).
