Background:
Since 2008, research on fish science and technology
at UFLA has made great progress, since several
projects have been approved by various funding
agencies, providing improvement in infrastructure
and materials available to carry out studies. Thus,
undergraduate students have taken more interest in
this area, which is extremely promising and lacking in
systematized research. In addition, there is a growing
demand of entrepreneurs of the aquaculture sector to
optimize production by supplying quality products
and exploiting the full commercial potential of fish.
These businessmen have constantly sought solutions
at the university, which nowadays is prepared to meet
their needs. NEPESCA (Center for Fish Studies), which
aims to integrate research with the needs of producers,
and vice-versa, was created in the Department of Food
Science on February 26, 2013, and develops integrated
activities to contribute to the sector’s growth. It
currently organizes lectures and seminars on various
topics and annually holds the Fish Day, where fishbased
materials and products are made available to
improve the consumption of this noble animal protein.
Overall Objectives:
To foster the integration of students and other
stakeholders in the area of coffee quality in order
to publicize teaching, research and extension
events, contributing to the acquisition and spread
of knowledge in coffee quality, processing and
consumption.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Fish Science and Technology: Studies of different
methods of fish slaughter, conservation, quality and
processing.
2. Development of new products: Improvement of the
fish production chain, with the development of new
products, adding value.
3. Use of Fish Processing Waste: Use of waste generated
in the production of low-cost nutritious food for the
production of biodiesel and acid silage, among other
uses.
4. Health: Fish on the Table - Health at Home: The
inclusion of fish in school meals contributes to
improving the nutritional state of children and is a
strategy that will yield future positive results.
