Background:

The Center for Studies in Parasitology (NEP) was

created in 2013 by a group of students linked to the

Laboratory of Parasite Biology, under the coordination

of Doctor Joziana Muniz de Paiva Braçante. NEP

has grown and currently comprises students from

various courses such as veterinary medicine, biology,

nutrition, and medicine, plus a few graduate students.

The group holds weekly meetings in which seminars

are presented and topics related to parasitology

are discussed. In 2014 the center held its first

university event together with PETI BIOPAR and the

Laboratory of Parasite Biology: the I Southern Minas

Symposium on Neglected Diseases. The goal was to

address leishmaniasis. In 2015, the II Southern Minas

Symposium on Neglected Diseases, also organized

by NEP, featured more than twenty speakers, three

workshops and the presentation of works on neglected

diseases. The center also carries out extension projects

in partnership with the environmental surveillance

service of the city of Lavras. Students are charged

with spreading acquired knowledge to the Lavras

population. This occurs through lectures, mainly on

tropical deseases as leishmaniasis and dengue fever, in

public and private schools and, annually, in the week

of August 10, the Leishmaniasis Control Week is held

as an extension project.

Overall Objectives:

To offer students with a specific interest in this area

time to study during their academic education and the

execution of tasks aiming at developing responsibility

and group work skills, besides training professionals

concerned with public health.

Areas of Expertise:

1. Health Education: Lectures on tropical deseases as

leishmaniasis and dengue fever delivered by members

in schools in the city of Lavras .

2. Extension for the population: Activities held in the

square for the entire Lavras community.

3. Academic Events: Symposiums organized by the

study center.
