Background:
Founded in 2013 by graduate students in applied
ecology, NIEco is the only active study group in the
Ecology and Conservation of Natural Resources Sector
and emerged from the desire to put to social use
(with application in public policies, industrial and
agricultural production processes and educational
purposes) the knowledge of ecology acquired by these
students during their undergraduate studies. It has
already held two Symposiums on Applied Ecology
(2013 and 2015) and has been developing activities in
environmental education and popularization of fauna
and flora knowledge in schools in the city of Lavras
(APAE, Escola da Unilavras, CEDET).
Overall Objectives:
NIECO is concerned with extending knowledge in
ecology outside the campus to society as a whole,
making society understand that it is embedded in
ecology and that knowledge of ecological patterns
and processes can make life easier for everyone and
enhance people’s interaction with nature.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Education: Ecology awareness and instruction in
elementary and secondary schools.
2. Learning: Discussion meetings of articles highly
relevant to ecology, aimed at undergraduate
students.
