Background:
The Beef Cattle Study Group (NEPEC) was created
in 2000 to establish a network between students,
professors, farmers and companies in Beef Cattle
Livestock Production. The goal of this group is to
improve the “know how” practical and theoretical in
raising this economically important species. Founded
by professors and students of the Department of
Animal Science of the Federal University of Lavras
(UFLA), had as a major idealistic and first coordinator
Professor Ivo Francisco de Andrade. After undergoing
renowned coordinations, since 2015 it has been under
Professor Mateus Pies Gionbelli’s responsibility.
The Group strives to supplement the knowledge
of Animal Science and Veterinarian students with
weekly meetings, lectures open to the community
and technical trips that provide all background
with the latest information in Beef Cattle nutrition
and production. Moreover, the group also holds the
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF BEEF CATTLE
PRODUCTION (SIMPEC, www.simpecufla.com.
br) every other year, an event renowned throughout
Brazil, especially for the quality of the lectures and for
gathering students and professionals from all over the
world.
Overall Objectives:
To promote Beef Cattle Livestock Production; to prepare
qualified professionals; to train students to work
with cattle on a farm; to organize events; to integrate
undergraduate, graduate students, professors, and
farmers.
Areas of Expertise:
1. UFLA’s beef cattle herd management: The group
performs daily activities in handling, care, data
control, registration of animals, reproductive control,
etc.
2. Research in beef cattle nutrition and production: All
the students are engaged to support research in beef
cattle nutrition, production, management, and Beef
Quality.
3. Organization of events: Workshops and
Symposiums are organized each semester and SIMPEC
(International Symposium on Beef Cattle Production)
is organized every other year.
4. Weekly meetings: To discuss technical and scientific
papers with the latest information in Beef Cattle
nutrition and production, organize events and
important activities.
