Background:
Founded in 2012, the Center for Studies in Speech and
Writing Studies - Nefale was proposed by Professor
Raquel Márcia Fontes Martins, of the Languages
course (Portuguese) of the Department of Human
Sciences - DCH of the Federal University of Lavras -
UFLA. Nefale arose from the interest of this professor
and of language students to investigate phenomena
related to speech and writing, as well as observed
relations between these two modes of language and
relations with other languages. The studies developed
at Nefale are mainly in the areas of phonetics
and phonology, linguistic variation and language
acquisition (speaking and writing). They are directly
linked to research developed by the said teacher, by
her research groups that involve interinstitutional
relations, and by her scientific initiation, senior year
and extension students. In addition, they support
extension activities such as training of basic education
teachers.
Overall Objectives:
To develop studies that analyze speech and writing,
including relations between these two modes of
language, focusing on theories related to sonority
and cognition, based on use, linguistic variation and
language acquisition phenomena.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Phonetics and Phonology: Studies on theories related
to sonority, cognitive linguistics, models that consider
the use and dynamic nature of language, as well as
linguistic multirepresentativeness.
2. Linguistic variation: Studies based mainly on
Labovian sociolinguistics, focusing on change and
sound variation.
3. Acquisition of language: Studies on speech acquisition
and special interest in writing acquisition combined with
literacy development.
