Center for Studies in Geomatics - NEGEO

Núcleo de Estudos

Person in Charge:

Professor Mirléia Aparecida de Carvalho

mirleia@deg.ufla.br

Institutional Information:

negeo.ufla@gmail.com

Background:

The emergence and advancement of new technologies

has altered the practical and theoretical characteristics

of the activities that include cartography, topographic

points, digital mapping, remote sensing, geographic

information systems, environment, etc. The same

technological progress has turned geomatics into a

fundamental human activity. Therefore, NEGEO was

founded on August 1, 2013 to meet the demand for

studies in the area of geomatics, in the Department

of Engineering. The center started developing projects

in partnership with HEVEA, a rubber tree research

program led by Professor Luiz Edson Mota de Oliveira

(Department of Biology, Plant Physiology sector).

Later came the partnership with SERGEO, a research

program in remote sensing and geoprocessing led by

Professor Marcelo de Carvalho Alves (Department of

Engineering, Geomatics sector). Currently we have a

partnership with professors Gláucia Miranda Ramirez

(UFMT) and Dejanyne Paiva Zamprogno (IFES), who

develop research and extension projects.

Overall Objectives:

To further studies and research in areas related to

geomatics, i.e., to integrate all resources used for the

acquisition and management of spatial data.

Areas of Expertise:

1. Topography: Precise and detailed description or

delineation of a limited portion of the Earth’s surface

(with the position of all its natural or artificial

features).

2. Remote Sensing: Information on objects, areas and

phenomena on the Earth’s surface (interaction of

electromagnetic radiation with the surface), executed

by remote sensors.

3. Geoprocessing: Computerized processing of

georeferenced data. This utilizes computer programs

that enable the use of cartographic information, etc.

4. Information System: Computational procedures

and human resources that allow and facilitate the

analysis, management or representation of space and

the phenomena that occur in it.
