Background:
Since 2011, the Center for Studies in Small Animals
(NEPA) has held lectures lasting approximately two
hours related to the areas of clinical practice, surgery
and anesthesiology, image diagnosis, animal pathology
and clinical pathology of companion animals. In order
to promote better integration of graduate students
in veterinary medicine residency programs in
professional health areas, NEPA/UFLA also addresses
these themes related to large animals. NEPA held
24 lectures in 2011, 13 lectures in 2012, 23 lectures in
2013, 30 lectures in 2014 and 17 lectures in the first
half of 2015. In addition, in 2014 NEPA organized two
nationwide events for veterinary medicine scholars
and professionals. The 1st Cycle of Lectures in Small
Animals was held in May 2014 and the 1st Meeting of
Veterinary Specialties in Small Animals took place in
November.
Overall Objectives:
To provide medical-veterinary technical assistance
services to rural properties; to develop research,
qualification and training activities; to develop and
disseminate technical knowledge among students of
veterinary medicine and veterinarians, with emphasis
on clinical practice and surgery of large animals.
Areas of Expertise:
1. Clinical practice and surgery/anesthesiology in
companion animals: Several topics related to these
areas of expertise are addressed in the lectures and
events held by NEPA. The center has 20 lecturers in
these areas.
2. Surgery/anesthesiology in large animals: Several
topics related to these areas of expertise are addressed
by six lecturers.
3. Image in veterinary medicine: The topics related to
this specialty are developed by four lecturers.
4. Clinical pathology and animal pathology: Four
lecturers are involved in addressing these areas.
