Center for Studies in Food Industry Materials -

NEMIA

Person in Charge:

Professor Marali Vilela Dias

maralivileladias@gmail.com

Institutional Information:

nemiaufla@gmail.com

Background:

The Center for Studies in Food Industry Materials was

founded in March 2012, under the coordination of

Welbert Freitas. In that same year, in October, NEMIA

had the honor of presenting work at the Minas Gerais

Food Engineering Congress (CMEA), an important

and prestigious event held by students of the Federal

University of Lavras. On October 31, NEMIA gave its

first lecture, delivered by the EMBRAPA researcher

Carlos Piller, on natural polymers processing. Later

on, in 2013, the I Cycle of Lectures on Materials

Science and Technology was held, a new event for food

engineering students, since they had the chance to

acquire knowledge on food grade materials. The center

also visited FEIPLASTIC (International Plastics Fair),

both in 2013 and 2015, a fair on innovations, trends and

information. To this day, its members engage in research

on packaging and food grade materials and hold

lectures on those same subjects, instigating knowledge

that goes beyond what has been learnt in the classroom.

Overall Objectives:

To contribute to the academic, professional and social

education of undergraduate and graduate students

through activities that enable interaction with the

area of ecology and plant conservation in its different

perspectives.

Areas of Expertise:

1. Material Science: Study of the properties of materials

(metals, ceramics, polymers) and the relationship

between structure, processes and final characteristics.

2. Food Packaging: Packaging is essential in the food

sector, since it avoids microbiological contamination,

loss of food characteristics, etc.
