øi recitire a aceluiaøi material. Farocki îøi situeazæ însæ lucrærile într-o epocæ a
fiindcæ include o producflie direcflionatæ a invizibilitæflii øi ascunderea unor elemente
Tocmai o gramatologie a vizualului,
o autonomizare a cîmpului sæu epistemic, face însæ posibilæ sesizarea modului
scena
In this respect, also in 1995, Farocki presented Arbeiter verlassen
die Fabrik, a documentary illustrating such a genealogical investigation,
putting together the topos of the “workers coming out of the
factory”, as it appeared in film history, from Lumière brothers to
Pasolini and Antonioni. In the same lineage one can understand his
1997 films, Der Ausdruck der Hände [The expression of hands] and
Stilleben [Still life]. In fact, one could say that Harun Farocki has created
by himself such an archive of visual tropes, through more than a
hundred films he created in over three decades of work. Farocki also
stated, no later than 1989, in his film Bilder der Welt und Inschrift
des Krieges [Images of the world and inscriptions of war], a principle
for the method used by Ujicæ: One does not have to look for new,
unseen, images, but to work with images that are already known, and
make them appear in new ways. Among the most powerful applications
of this principle is Gefängnisbilder [Images of prison], 2000, in
which Farocki uses archival images recorded by surveillance cameras
of prison inmates, but also Deep Play, his installation at documenta
12 in 2007, bringing into view the close rela-tionship between power
and image, the complex proliferation of apparatuses of capture
around a “simple” game of football. Of course, the novelty brought
in by Farocki and Ujicæ is not so much the re-use of images already
recorded, as Pierre Billard already raised the issue of “visual waste”
and unused material in 1963, but more in a Lévi-Straussian context,
of bricolage and re-reading the same material. However, Farocki
places his work in an epoch of culture industry in which the visual
looms large, in which the formations of power, capital accumulation
and truth itself depend on the visual. And unlike the subjective experience,
as well as unlike the dynamics of text and sound, a fundamental
feature of the visual, an essence of its “grammar”, is that the
absence cannot be shown in images. As a result, the image becomes
a key instrument for power, which is always interested in the perpetuation
or the controlled change of an existing, present order.
The image is a cultural reality that fully inscribes reality under the
category of “being”, imposing presences. The ubiquity of visual culture
and the cognitive associations through images are, in this
respect, at the same time, a huge apparatus of limiting the potential
of change, because it includes a directed production of invisibility and
hides certain essential elements of modern life, such as the character
of internal colonies of the prison and military barracks, for example.
In other words, the industries of photography, film, television produce
a certain semiotic repertoire of visual tropes, thus directing and
limiting the framework of subjective experience and cultural memory.
As a result, on the one hand, the ready-made materials of visual culture
industry are a source for critical reflection, which aims to find the
new articulations of power and the historical limits of subjectivity precisely
in the visual apparatuses created by power, and, on the other
hand, critical reflection using visual means seems to be trapped
in the fragile position of an internal criticism, always looking for
absences, for that which is not shown or cannot be seen, always
threatened by the thesis that the rules of composition of the regime
of visibility are not of a visual nature themselves. But it is precisely a
grammatology of the visual, an insulation of its epistemic field which
