acelei metanarafliuni a decadenflei, dupæ cum recunosc chiar critici anticomuniøti:
articulare a puterii statale.
scena
ition is that these unseen, not shown moments will reveal cracks in
the armor of the dictator, his true face, and his gradual fall into paranoia,
the detachment from the world of the autocratic dictator.
Thus, the horizon of expectation is predictable and uncontroversial,
and is even reinforced by the narrative thread, which is very simple,
editing the material according to a chronological pattern punctuated
by conventional “great moments”: the trial, flashback, the death
of [previous CP leader] Dej, the coming to power, the 1968 speech,
Nixon’s visit in Romania, Ceauøescu’s visit to Beijing, the urban plan
of Bucharest, official visits at working places etc. The problem is that
neither the visual medium nor Ceauøescu’s personality match that
intuition: firstly, the film does not reveal many new things, showing
no essential difference between Ceauøescu’s private life and Ceauøescu
in public office, but rather a total dedication, which is at least
embarrassing compared to contemporary work ethics (including
those of politicians), and even what would be called in any other
case good faith and loyalty. No “dirt” is disclosed or hinted at, and
far from appearing as mentally ill or retarded, Ceauøescu seems like
a pensive person, whose political convictions are his true passion
(see the speech on his birthday). As a result, Ceauøescu “comes out”
of his biography as a kind of embodiment of that ideal of modernity,
the transparent subject. Despite the elimination from his biography
of the classical romantic elements (revolutionary youth, prison,
romance with Elena), the unpredictable, but undeniable effect is
Ceauøescu’s humanization, in the sense of acquiring a familiarity
with the “dictator” that contradicts the mechanisms of distancing
of the anti-communist ideology, already established in the structures
of perception of the subjectivity of transition. Thus, the film dissolves
that post-communist anti-communist default, the negationist explanation
of communism as “madness” or “non-sense”.
Secondly, Ceauøescu’s figure does not match the expected negative
teleology, the meta-narrative of decay. Even the anti-communist critics
have acknowledged it: “the former dictator appears in a surprising
light”; “for someone born recently and who knows no history,
in these images Ceauøescu seems a patriotic man, of good faith, likeable,
a precursor of the new Europe, even a cultivated man”;
“How does Ceauøescu par lui-même ’come out’? Unexpectedly complex!”
Only one critic tried to see in the film the confirmation of his
own horizon of expectations, through an indirect characterization of
Ceauøescu: “a slice of history in the representation of an increasingly
un-creditable narrator”. Even the ridiculous scenes, such as the
staged presidential visit to a bread shop do not so much show the
irrationality or the fictional bubble in which the dictator submersed
himself into, but the internal folds of the power, the essentially nonhomogeneous
mode of articulation of state power.
For those who do not appreciate avant-garde or “art cinema” in
itself, this contradiction of the horizon of expectations has generated
very harsh criticism, coming from professional colleagues: “But where
is our Calvary? If for no other reason, at least to show it to them, too?
Where are the queues? . . . 40,000 Euros is too much money for stuff
made available free of charge. . . . Yes, it’s a shitty documentary . . .
and Ujicæ is even worse . . . to put in his pocket a hat full of money
