Adeværata marcæ a despærflirii
istorii. Eliminarea comentariului explicit øi a vocii din off riscæ sæ reproducæ astfel acea
tocmai întorcînd privirea ochiului camerei asupra spectatorului.
scena
cisely for those who are familiar with Ceauøescu. And blurring the
context opens the door, for all the others, to a purely aesthetic,
escapist reception, whose effect is precisely the alienation from one’s
own history, and the reframing of the film in the context of the subjective
experience shaped by culture industry, as noted by Florin
Poenaru: “The film was thus integrated to an everyday, family-set
TV experience: a successful sitcom in which the subjective laughter
of the viewers overlaps and becomes one with the ’objective’, automatic
laugh track of the TV. The true mark of the separation from
the totalitarian-communist past is nothing more than a Western-like
laughter: introducing a temporal and subjective distance between
the present and a past turned into otherness; the past as a ’foreign
country.’” 9 The laughter of the audience is also the result of the confrontation
with a hard-to-believe reality, with that mythical level of
the global presence of [Romanian] locality, an autonomous sense
of the world specific to the local historical experience of communism,
something which is completely opposed to the “normal“ identity
of dependency and inferiority, learned in the post-communist
transition. In this sense, Ujicæ achieves indeed “greatness” in a classical
sense with his movie, in so far as The Autobiography confronts
the local viewers with the actual tragic experience of losing the
sense of the world. The distancing laughter is only the superficial
effect of a deep existential discomfort.
Another side effect of eliminating the commentaries and information
is the repetition of a normative version of Ceauøescu’s life – that simple
script – missing key dimensions, lacks which produce significant
absences. Thus, the absence of images with Ceauøescu’s visits and
meetings with leaders of the Third World is striking, given that his
foreign policy was radically influenced by meetings such as those
with Amilcar Cabral. The break from the USSR not only meant visits
to the Queen of England and Disneyland, but also major tours and
political projects, a vision of the world in active solidarity with the
global south, in quest of a politics of liberation outside the limited
possibilities prescribed by the two great superpowers. In the context
of a film of this magnitude, this absence itself becomes a commentary
on the Eurocentrism of the standard perception of Ceauøescu’s
life and career, and on how Eurocentrism limits the perspective on
one’s own history. The elimination of explicit commentaries and
voiceover risks thus reproducing the implicit, uncritical, dominant
mode of interpretation, on multiple levels.
However, the most interesting part of working with a pure flow of
images is what we might call the attempt at an epistemic break,
when an implicit interpretation becomes an apparatus of capture
turned towards the spectator: Ujicæ does not invent the new subject
of history, he’s not looking for it, he simply finds le peuple qui manque
in historical experience, in the cultural memory. The secondary
material used in propaganda films is stripped of commentaries, edited
anew (with an implicit interpretation), and revalued exactly by
turning the camera eye on the viewer. Just like a literary “author”
is a being appearing in a universe of discourses, not facts, the autonomous
visual flow calls for and/or generates a subject for its percep-
