¬ De ce a fost invitat Restaurantul Instructables sæ participe tocmai la aceastæ
expoziflie de artæ?
√ Cred cæ a existat un interes comun legat de abordarea ideilor de ospitalitate øi
auctorialitate. Pentru curatorul expozifliei, Leo Delfgaauw, øi pentru coordonatorul
Maaike Gottschal, restaurantul, pe lîngæ funcflia sa de loc în care se mænîncæ øi se bea,
trebuia sæ creeze posibilitatea dezbaterii øi a schimbului øi sæ facæ oamenii sæ se simtæ
bine-venifli. În fond, titlul expozifliei era Casa de oaspefli. Orice restaurant, chiar øi ca

and the coordinator Maaike Gottschal the restaurant, apart form its
function as a place to eat and drink, needed to be a facility for
debate and exchange, and it needed to create a sense of welcome.
Afterall the title of the exhibition was Guesthouse. Any restaurant,
even as a metaphor, expresses the idea of hospitality and the facilitation
of the other. In the Instructables Restaurant this function is
taken to another level because we serve, quite literally, the ideas
of others. This is also why it becomes interesting to participate in an
art exhibition where individual authorship is of such importance.
There was obviously a big contrast between the products in the exhibition
and the products in the restaurant. The open-source discussion
applies a different set of paradigms and a different vocabulary
to express its inner workings. There are no outsiders and there is no
clear distinction between guest and host. The individual exists within
a transparency. Visibility becomes a function of the collective, and
the immediation of individual knowledge a function of collective
expression. Obviously these are big words compared to the relative
simplicity of the restaurant itself but that’s precisely the point.
We need to mix-up languages to try to understand how digital reality
is changing the way we work and live. The friction between the
restaurant and the art exhibition is an important one, and one that
should not be ignored. It embodies the design/art paradox.
It was smart of Leo Delgaauw and Maaike Gottschal to bring a
restaurant to the exhibition but it was also a risk. Art and design
don’t always work well together.
¬ What about the local context?
√ One of the strong ideas behind the restaurant is that it gets
adopted by a community of involved authors. The problem is that
this remains very abstract if these authors live on the other side
of the world and are not in a position to visit the restaurant.
So in Rotterdam we connected this global view on information with
a local approach. We encouraged people from the neighborhood
Afrikaanderwijk to upload their favorite recipes and instructions to
instructables.com. So despite ourselves we started to feed information
back into the web, and immediately activated it in the restaurant.
As a result the public, or guests, consisted of a radical mix of
art lovers and locals looking for a bite to eat. Somehow everybody
felt like they belonged there. And they did.
Instructables is a website specializing in user-created and uploaded
(HYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do-it-yourself), do-ityourself
projects, which other users can comment on and rate for
quality. An instructable is a step-by-step guide showing how you
made or did something. The website was created by (HYPERLINK
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eric_Wilhelm&action=
edit&redlink=1), Eric Wilhelm, a mechanical engineer, and it was
launched in August 2005. Today it has close to 2 million members.
Instructables stimulates step-by-step collaboration to build a variety
of projects. Users post instructions to their projects, usually accompanied
by visual aids, and then interact through comment sections
below each instructable, as well as in topic forums. The Instructables
Restaurant is an independent initiative of two Instructables members,
Arne Hendriks and Bas van Abel.
