a acestei lipse morbide a reflecfliei critice, diferenflele narative dintre anticomunismul
în reconstituirea procesului realizatæ de Milo Rau în 2009, The Last Hour of Elena
Problema recurentæ a trilogiei e relaflia
scena
ed by “communism”, questioning endlessly the story of the ghostly
persistence of the communist “sequelae” as the reason for the failures
of transition, and even as a subtext for the failures of the current
capitalism; one can also talk about the moral bankruptcy of the
intellectual anti-communist elite, as evidenced by the lack of an
internationally significant intellectual production, but also by political
opportunism and commitment to the causes of the new dominant
powers and ideologies; finally, perhaps the most visible failure
remains that of the Final Report of the “Tismæneanu Commission”,
a pseudo-academic document that resolved or completed nothing,
apart from the internal order within and between the institutions of
Romanian anti-communism. Let’s say that currently, as a direct result
of this morbid lack of critical reflection, the narrative differences
between institutionalized highbrow anti-communism and the discourse
on “communism” of the tabloids are minimal. The institutionalized
anti-communism moved away permanently from its mission of
reconciliation with the past, succeeded in imposing only a systematical
distanciation from one’s own past, an alienation from one’s own
history – a social mechanism of denial. It can be argued that although
the anti-communist theses on communism are all too clear, anticommunism
still hasn’t dealt with its relationship to the deceased’s
death, to what has disappeared.
Without making an exhaustive inventory, remarkable attempts to
critical reflection directly related to the figure of Ceauøescu have
emerged outside the institutionalized anti-communism, in independent
cultural spaces: in music, “The Ballad of the Dictator” sung by
Niculae Neacøu of the Taraf de Haiduci; in writing, through Ion
lanoøi’s book, Me and Him: Subjective Notes on Ceauøescu (2007)
and Aurel Codoban’s reflections on the parallel career of Nicolae
Ceauøescu and the Romanian Television 3 ; in theater, through the
reenactment of the trial performed by Milo Rau in 2009, The Last
Hour of Elena and Nicolae Ceauøescu 4 ; and, finally, in film, with
Andrei Ujicæ’s The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauøescu.
Ujicæ’s film closes the trilogy that began with Videograms of a Revolution
and continued with Out of the Present, perhaps the most
remarkable production of the series – and for me one of the keyfilms
of the transition. The recurring issue in the trilogy is the relation
between images and history or the writing of history through
images. Andrei Ujicæ is a writer who escaped from the “prison of
language” when he escaped Romania and became a filmmaker in
Germany, in the context of a creative explosion of media theory and
practice. On top of this genealogy one can place Friedrich Kittler,
founder of the German media theory in the early 1980s, “Medienhistoriker”,
and probably the most important German “poststructuralist“
theorist, and the prolific filmmaker Harun Farocki, co-author with
Ujicæ of the Videograms, but also Peter Sloterdijk, who came from
another direction, being also one of the most creative German theorists.
All Ujicæ’s films are articulated within this tension between the
critical reflection on the autonomy of the medium, on one side, and
literary or artistic creativity, on the other. Although called “documentaries”,
Ujicæ’s films have a specific relationship to history, to
the truth and the technical media, which can be understood only
